The Acropolis is historical and beautiful structure that is thousands of years old. The Acropolis was built in honor of the patron goddess of Athens, Athena, who was the Greek goddess of wisdom. According to mythology, she introduced the olive tree to the city of Athens. The Acropolis of Athens is a cliff-like structure with multiple historical temples and builings, the most famous being the Parthenon. The Parthenon is a large temple to Athena.
Tourist Information
Being the most popular tourist attraction in Athens, the Acropolis is not far away from the toursit buzz. The Acropolis is located in the Plaka, the most touristy town in Athens. Here, you’ll be surrounded by hundreds of restaurants and hotels.
Getting There
Walking: The Acropolis is not hard to get to by foot, and even if you stay in a neighborhood outside of the Plaka, like Kolonaki, Syntagma, or Monastiraki, you won’t be more than a twenty-five minute walk from it.
Bus: Buses are a really great way to get around Athens, and if you are staying in one of the towns south of Athens, near Piraeus, they are probably your best bet on getting to the Acropolis. Buses stop regularly in Plaka and Syntagma, and from there a ten minute walk will get you to the base of the Acropolis.
Tours: There are many companies that offer tours to the Acropolis, and they can be extremely helpful at times. Not only can they take you in a bus or car to the Acropolis, they also have a tour guide to show you around. I would reccomend booking tours on GetYourGuide.
Car or Taxi: The majority of tourists don’t need a car in Athens, just because its easier and cheaper to walk or take the bus, but if you plan to rent a car, getting from any point in Athens to the Acropolis should be quick and easy. But, if you’ve never driven in Athens before, you should know that the roads are usually filled with traffic, and that the way people drive in Greece is different than the way people drive in other countries (i.e. they drive much quicker and its more chaotic.) If you plan to take a taxi to the Acropolis, then just make sure sure to beware the infamous taxi scam.
